How can I be a better servant to God?
Thousands of books are published about leadership but a few about servant-hood. Everybody want to lead and nobody wants to be a servant. In today’s world, we find it very hard to avail ourselves for God at any given time. We have busy schedules and plans we don’t want to be messed up without showing resentment.
But this exactly what servant-hood is about; not being able to choose when and where we want to serve and giving up the right to control our schedules and allowing God to interrupt them when He needs to.
Are you a called soldier who is tangled up in the affairs of everyday life and your actions displeasing to the one who called you? Then the time has come to consider the following guides that will help you to become a better servant.
Paul thought of himself as a ‘servant of Christ’. In everything he was subordinate and subject to Christ, and that Master set the parameters of his obedience. Paul understood that God didn’t call him to be creative but obedient, not innovative but faithful. For Paul, success in the ministry depended upon pleasing God. To proof his faithfulness to God Paul says; “For am I now seeking the favour of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.” (Galatians 1:10)
Pay attention to needs
As a servant, you should always be on the lookout for ways to help others. When you see a need, seize the moment to meet it, just as the Bible commands us, ‘whenever you have an opportunity, we have to do what is good for everyone, especially for the family of believers. (Galatians 6:10) When you are part of a congregation, you should always find an opportunity to serve. If not in the service of others, then how can we serve God who is in need of nothing?
We miss many occasions for serving because we lack sensitivity and spontaneity. Great opportunities to serve never last long so take advantage when the moment comes.
Be faithful to the ministry.
Faithfulness has always been rare quality posed by human beings. Most people don’t know the meaning of commitment. Are you also counted this list? Well you can change this behaviour by refraining from making commitments casually and then break them for the slightest reason without any hesitation, remorse or regret. Be a person that people can always count on, keep promises you need to keep, vows you need to fulfil and honour your commitments. God has promised to reward your faithfulness in eternity.
Be Humble
As much as we are always applauded for our selfless and generous behaviour, we have to be careful not to develop and overinflated sense of self-importance. No matter how far along we get in the walk with the Lord, there is never a time when there is nothing we need from other believer. God has intentionally designed it this way. We don’t all have the same function in the Body of Christ and we all need each other.
Be thankful
As a devoted servant of the Lord you will be sure to take thetime to thank God, regardless of your schedule and your own sense of urgency for the task at hand. Before you ask for another thing from God or present anything else to his people, Paul ensures that he gives thanks to the Provider of all things. The frequent giving of thanks in the life of a believer is and often repeated, highly important practice in all of Paul’s teachings (see Phil. 4:6; Col 3:15; 1 Tim 2:1)
Learn to detach yourself from the false identity that your ego has fabricated for you and connect to your true self, a being of higher divinity.
